aggressive dogs fight each other while growing

There are several factors, both learned and innate, that can lead a dog to adopt aggressive behaviors. Understanding what is triggering your dog’s aggression is an important first step. In our aggressive dog training program, we help you identify these triggers, so you can predict and prevent aggressive reactions.

Some dog breeds were actually bred for aggressive behavior. For example, terriers were bred to kill rodents, and breeds such as Rottweilers and Dobermans were bred as guard dogs. And unfortunately, many “bully breeds” were bred to fight and kill other dogs, as well as other animals.

If your dog is a rescue, they may have trauma or learned behaviors from past owners. These factors can be difficult to overcome. Dont do it alone! Our aggressive behavior training programs in Denver are built to identify and overcome these exact issues.

Why are dogs aggressive?

When to call a Professional Dog Trainer

If your dog has exhibited any behavior that has put themselves or someone else at risk, it’s time to call a professional dog trainer. Aggression is a serious issue, and you shouldn’t tackle it alone. As experts in dog aggression, our professional dog trainers in Denver can help you manage your dog’s behavior effectively, with results that last a lifetime.

  • Protective aggression: Your dog wants to protect members of the pack (including you) against what it sees as a danger. However, mother dogs are naturally very protective of their puppies. Mama dogs can become aggressive toward anyone who gets too close.

  • Frustration aggression: Your dog may become aggressive out of frustration when it’s on a leash or fenced-in in the yard.

  • Sex-related aggression: It’s common for two male dogs to become aggressive when competing for a female dog. This only applies to intact male dogs, and can be remedied with neutering.

  • Predatory aggression: Dogs can behave aggressively when their predatory instinct is triggered, such as when chasing a rabbit. However, this instinct can be very serious when it involves a small child.

  • Fear aggression: This occurs when your dog is fearful and attempts to flee a scary situation, but will attack if he or she feels cornered.

  • Defensive aggression: This is similar to fear aggression, however, the dog will attack defensively rather than trying to flee first.

  • Social aggression: Your dog reacts aggressively towards other dogs, often to determine hierarchy. Dogs that have not been properly socialized with other dogs, as well as people, can also show social aggression.

  • Territorial aggression: Your dog wants to defend its territory from what it perceives as an intruder and a danger. Territorial dog training can calm this behavior.

  • Possessive aggression: Your dog is extremely protective of its food, toys, bones, or anything it values. This is also called resource guarding.

  • Pain-elicited aggression: Dogs often are aggressive when they are injured or are in extreme pain.

DOES MY DOG NEED MEDICATION?

In most cases, no, your dog does not need medication, you need the right training. We often see dogs that have been medicated for common behavior problems that can be reduced or eliminated through training, ie: separation anxiety, nervous behavior, or leash reactivity. In almost all cases, training is enough to overcome these problems. Some dogs, despite all efforts, may not be capable of learning alternative behaviors and coping strategies, but these dogs are extremely rare. Most dogs only need medication short-term and we are happy to collaborate with your veterinarian about medication options if needed.

What people say about our Aggressive Dog Training Program

“Dion is absolutely wonderful to work with! So knowledgeable and while the actual dog training is important, it's the focus on teaching the owners that is a crucial component of this program. When we got our second dog (both australian shepherd mixes) we saw he was much harder to train. He's way more reactive, has a much higher prey drive, and is just generally bigger than our other dog and after a couple of incidents we decided we needed help. We're not even finished the program yet, but he's already a changed dog!
Rachel, Denver Colorado

“Dion is an incredible dog trainer! The quality of our lives improved dramatically as a result of his teachings; and the outcomes? Simply Amazing!!! I moved to Denver from San Francisco to reunite with my ex-wife and inherited her two dogs. Their poor behavior was so disruptive that I questioned whether I could actually reconcile our relationship. My ex-wife tried several dogs trainers with no noticeable results. Feeling  hopeless; she just gave up. I was so desperate to help, I began to search for high quality dog trainers. After careful consideration I chose Ancillary K9, reading all the rave reviews gave me a sense that this was likely a good choice. I soon realized, that this was a GREAT choice with “jaw-dropping” results! By the end of 6 weeks they were blowing our minds!  Dion, has Mastered his craft, with skill and expertise. He helped me connect with these wonderful animals….AND let’s face it….Dion saved our marriage!”
